People Tracking the Preaux Career of Fred Stamps

I'm not around a computer very often and won't be able to check this for a couple of weeks at the soonest so there is no rush to reply. I am wondering what team will draft Fred Stamps? I know he is small and I read Steve Smith is five foot nine inches, do you thnk the Panthers might draft him to play with Jake Delhomme?

While I would love to see Jake throw to Fred, (they could do much NFL damage together) I'm picking Pittsburgh.

Oddly enough, Id say Tennessee because they always seem good at evaluating talent on draft day, thus why the saints will not pick him up.

Lord, please, don't let the Saints draft Fred. Be kind and let him go to a team that wants to win and knows how to treat their players, Amen.

Every year since about'85 I have been giving my old friend Carl Smith (now with the Clev. Browns) the sleeper picks of the year. Rarely has he been able to draft any (Keno Hills was an exception for which he never has let me live down). Of course all these sleepeers have been Cajuns---This year Fred Stamps gets the nod. by the way, last year I received a call from him right before the draft saying that they were really int. in both the corners--word gets around.

I read a story ten minutes ago on one of these raginpager forums that says his old receivers coach at UL is the new receivers coach with Buffalo. I predict Bledsoe will be his quarterback and the Bills will be paying his bills, after they draft Stamps in the 5th round that is.

  7. UL Football Louisiana's Stamps & Williams sign with SuperBowl XXIII participants

Undrafted Cajun duo inks deals as free agents.

LAFAYETTE — NFL scouting is an inexact science, and no two players exemplify that more than Louisiana's Wendall Williams and Fred Stamps.

Williams never really settled into one position for the Ragin' Cajuns, playing wide receiver and defensive back in a career that ended last season.

But Williams' size (currently 6-foot-2, 216 pounds) and speed (4.4 40-yard dash) earned him attention and he has signed a free agent contract with the Cincinnati Bengals as a safety and special teams prospect.

Stamps was one of the most productive pass receivers in Ragin' Cajun history, second only to current Indianapolis Colt Brandon Stokley on most lists, but this is not a good year to be a smallish wideout.

The 2004 NFL Draft was flooded with top prospects like Roy Williams of Texas, Larry Fitzgerald of Pittsburgh, Reggie Williams of Washington, LSU's Michael Clayton and Devery Henderson, Lee Evans of Wisconsin, Oklahoma State's Rashaun Woods and others.

Stamps slipped under the radar despite his numbers in such a year, but still signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers, the same team that picked UL foe Woods.

frisco is a great choice for fred..

    yes they did draft 2 wr's .. #1 (31) rashawn woods.. 3rd round (77) derrick hamilton... clemson

the positive side of this is that even the front office knows they require wr's

if fred prepares himself correctly.. studies his playbook (never making a mental mistake) and can make a nice catch or two in his first mini-camp.. to get noticed early.. let them know he can return punts..he has a decent shot at making the club (believe the practice squad has been raised from 5 to 7 guys)

Are these 6 month contracts to see if they make the team? If they make the team they get NFL minimum I doubt that is the free agent contract. Does anyone know?

I think I heard on espn 1420 this morning someone ask the same question and the reply was a free agent contract is something like 20 or 30 thousand. Then if they sign they get at least the league minimum which is 300 or 350 thousand.

CINCINNATI (AP) - San Jose State quarterback Scott Rislov and 17 other undrafted free agents signed two-year deals Tuesday with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Running back Nick Ayers, who attended a high school in Cincinnati and played at Georgetown College in Kentucky, was among the group. The Bengals hold training camp at Georgetown.

Also signing contracts were 10 offensive players: guards Tyronne Armstrong of Pittsburg State in Kansas and Ibrahim ''Obby'' Khan from Simon Fraser in Canada; receivers Jamall Broussard from San Jose State, Jeremiah Cockheran from Hawaii, Marlus Mays from Northern Iowa, and Lance Young from Iowa State; center Michael Powers from Penn; tight ends Michael Woolridge from Eastern Kentucky and Jonathan Pritchett from Houston, and fullback Alex Wade from Duke.

The defensive players were end Derrick Crawford from Texas A&M; tackles Mondre Dickerson from Tennessee and Eric Johnson from Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati; linebacker Larry Stevens from Michigan, and safety Wendell Williams from Louisiana-Layfayette.

well i didn't get to hear that.. tell me it wasn't the stinking genius.. (smiling)

that's almost as bad as i heard a caller to his show say larry fitzgerald was going to be a bust in the nfl.. whoaa.. well, neither i believe is true..

my guess is a free agent signs on with a team for the agreed "signing bonus".. some bonuses may be that high.. but that high of a figure is rare and is gaged as to the number of teams wanting his services

then the rookie gets paid per week the typical price scale for rookies during camp.. (all monies paid during camp is extra money.. doesn't count against any contract money).. vets get a pay scale higher and the same whether having played 2 years or 12 years.. then if the FA makes the team.. he will get paid whatever amount he signed for that year.. which 100% of the time would be rookie minimum.. which i think is 230K for this season
