Thread: Tracking the Preaux Career of Fred Stamps

  1. UL Football Edmonton Eskimos sign WR Fred Stamps

Edmonton, Alberta (Sports Network) - The Edmonton Eskimos re-signed slotback Mookie Mitchell to a one-year deal and signed rookie wide receiver Fred Stamps on Tuesday.

Mitchell, an 11-year CFL veteran, started 15 games for the Eskimos and caught 70 passes for 892 yards and one touchdown. In his third year with the team, he had four games with 100-plus yards receiving, including a 161-yard performance against Winnipeg on Canada Day.

The 6-0, 188-pound Stamps from Louisiana-Lafayette spent time with both the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL.

  2. UL Football Fred Stamps gets C.F.L. props

VANCOUVER -- Fred Stamps is receiving some early rave reviews from two of the brightest minds in the C.F.L..

"I think Fred is an exceptional player," said Edmonton Eskimo offensive co-ordinator Jacques Chapdelaine on his rookie receiver.

Before taking on the B.C. Lions last night at B.C. Place, Stamps also earned praise from Wally Buono.

"He is an excellent athlete, he has got excellent speed," said Buono, the highly-regarded Lions head coach.

Considering Stamps has only played in six games with the Eskimos this year - catching 18 balls for 179 yards entering last night - those are pretty big compliments.

But after missing all of September because of an appendectomy, the 25-year-old import has become a dependable target for rookie quarterback Stefan LeFors.

I was wondering what happened to Jake's backup, now I know. How fun would it be if Fred jumps to the Panthers next year.

That's awesome. Fred's still chasing the NFL dream. Can't stop; won't stop.

Stamps was and still is the man. Congrats

  7. UL Football Now that's a Receiver

"On one play, Fred Stamps took out three B.C. Lions. He knocked the linebacker that he was suppose to be blocking, knocked him back into the next linebacker in.

"And, of course, the halfback was chasing Fred in.

"It was on a toss play to AJ Harris."

Based on stats entering this week, Edmonton didn't have a single receiver in the top five on the CFL's yardage chart.

Ironically, the Lions had two in the top five: Geroy Simon (483 yards) and Paris Jackson (477).

But Edmonton has three in the top 11 - Campbell, Kamau Peterson and Stamps.

never doubt fred. i vividly remember the hurricane lilly game at aggie field in br. first play on offense for the cajuns. van cleave drops back and unloads about 50 down the field. for a split second i could swear that stamps had the ball...only to see it roll away from him on the ground. not to be. but this, my friends, is a catch. by the way, why did we not have an uproar about playing a road game so soon after a major hurricane hit our fair city back in '02? i remember another school, about 3 years later, squealing like a stuck pig because they had to play tennessee right after a major hurricane. i guess we cajuns are just a tougher bunch.
