Undrafted Cajun duo inks deals as free agents.
LAFAYETTE — NFL scouting is an inexact science, and no two players exemplify that more than Louisiana's Wendall Williams and Fred Stamps.
Williams never really settled into one position for the Ragin' Cajuns, playing wide receiver and defensive back in a career that ended last season.
But Williams' size (currently 6-foot-2, 216 pounds) and speed (4.4 40-yard dash) earned him attention and he has signed a free agent contract with the Cincinnati Bengals as a safety and special teams prospect.
Stamps was one of the most productive pass receivers in Ragin' Cajun history, second only to current Indianapolis Colt Brandon Stokley on most lists, but this is not a good year to be a smallish wideout.
The 2004 NFL Draft was flooded with top prospects like Roy Williams of Texas, Larry Fitzgerald of Pittsburgh, Reggie Williams of Washington, LSU's Michael Clayton and Devery Henderson, Lee Evans of Wisconsin, Oklahoma State's Rashaun Woods and others.
Stamps slipped under the radar despite his numbers in such a year, but still signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers, the same team that picked UL foe Woods.
