Thread: Expect local coverage to improve at the Advertiser

  1. I have a Question Expect local coverage to improve at the Advertiser

Readers know what they want — and say so

It’s always enlightening to spend an evening listening to readers. They always are frank. They are always to-the-point. They are always honest.

Last week, The Daily Advertiser had invited a group of readers to come discuss the newspaper.

“I want to know who died. I want to know who was arrested. And I want to know who got married,” one reader said.

Sounds simple enough. But newspapers need to listen to readers in order to stay on top of what they care about.

For some readers, it’s not just about obits, arrests and weddings. They tell me it’s about giving them something they can’t get anywhere else. It’s about telling the community’s story, every day in every section.

In the coming weeks, The Daily Advertiser will roll out additional coverage on Acadiana. Jim Bradshaw, recently promoted to regional editor, is leading this effort. He’s joined by Kayla Gagnet, a new reporter at the newspaper. Claudia Laws is a new photographer, who starts this week.

My objective is to continue stem-to-stern coverage in Lafayette but also to give our readers throughout Acadiana a better representation of the news events in their communities, in their neighborhoods, in their schools. . .

. . . Also this week, general assignment reporter Marsha Sills has a new assignment. Starting Monday, she’ll be charged with covering the University of Louisiana. The university is a small city, as all of you know. For many months, we have been without a university reporter. But that changes Monday and so will the level of coverage the university has seen. In addition to sports coverage, UL Lafayette deserves academic and social coverage. Marsha will provide that.

Not only do those on campus want to know what’s going on. But those off-campus care equally as much. It’s the beginning of what I hope will be extensive coverage of a place that is in the heart of our city.

These are just a few changes we’ve made to make The Daily Advertiser more vital in the lives of its readers. I want to thank all the readers who have joined us for discussions and to the ones who will be joining us in the future. If you’d like to be part of a discussion group, contact me at

What I want as an editor is feedback about what you’re reading. Thankfully, there is always a steady source of that.

(Juli Metzger is executive editor of The Daily Advertiser.)

    The entire story

I know Marsha Sills personally, she is a graduate of UL and an excellent reporter, I think she will do a great job covering UL.

Be sure to tell her to use UL more often. I often read her articles, and she uses UL Lafayette every time it comes up.

Does it really matter?? Honestly, what is it going to do for ULL?? The Athens part certainly doesn't seem to hurt Georgia! Neither does Urbana-Champain to Illinois! Berkley to Cal! Austin to Texas! These schools are not known b/c of their names-they are known for their merit (on and off the field). Southern Miss seems to be running circles around us on/off the field even with this so called dreaded regional distinction. Look at where Arky St is after their name game in the 60's. Didn't work.

Pardon me Mr. Bengal, but you might notice on todays Regional it was GEORGIA, NOT GEORGIA AT ATHENS. Later it will be Texas not Texas at Austin. For the millionth time if it matters not a hill of beans why does the a & m school not list itself as LSU A & M on its equipment and logos. If it matters not why did the minons of the purple puke nation gather to defeat the name in 84. If it matters not why bother us with your view.

Again: Southern Miss seems to be running circles around us on/off the field even with this so called dreaded regional distinction. Look at where Arky St is after their name game in the 60's. Didn't work.

"if it matters not a hill of beans why does the a & m school not list itself as LSU A & M on its equipment and logos"

You have got to be kidding me. Not that it matters, but I own an LSU A&M ball cap. LSU does not try to hide the A&M. Why would they? Georgia hats say UGA on them, hell their mascot is called UGA. Ever hear of Ga Tech complaining about playing second fiddle to UGA? UCLA does just fine with their regional attachment. USC as well. All I am saying is the name does not make the school, the school makes the name.

"LSU does not try to hide the A&M."

Yeah, but they're not forced to use it by state law either. We are not only forced to use the city tag, it specifies the size ratio that the city tag has to be in proportion to the "UL". For something that suppossedly doesn't matter (and I agree the name doesn't make the school we've got to achieve success on the filed and in the classroom)LSUA&M-BR and their cronies in the legislature sure did go to a lot of trouble to make sure it regulate it.

That is a little nuts, but it doesn' seem to affect the baseball uniforms? The football helmets? How accurate is that?

THE FOOTBALL HELMETS SAY "RAGIN CAJUNS" NOT LOUISIANA OR LOUISIANA LAFAYETTE!!!!! BASEBALL SAY LOUISIANA'S RAGIN CAJUNS!!!

IF THE NAME MEANT "NOTHING" 1984 WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED AND ALL THE REGULATIONS/STIPULATIONS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PUT IN PLACE BY LSU A&M @ BR!!!!

KING OF THE MOUNTAIN KEEPS SWATTING AT EVERYONE ELSE IN THE STATE TO "TRY" TO KEEP THEM OFF THE TOP!!

IT WON'T WORK, WE ARE GAINING GROUND!!!!

"Ever hear of Ga Tech complaining about playing second fiddle to UGA?"

You mean Georgia Institute of Technology, more popularly known as Ga Tech. It's not a name game or about dropping or adding part of an official name. It's about being able to market yourself using variations of your name without interference from anyone. It's not like we're talking about violating someone's copyright protection.
