WASHINGTON (AP) - Salmonella found in alfalfa sprouts appears to
have sickened 23 people in 10 states, including one infant in
Oregon, prompting a nationwide recall of the product.
The Oregon Department of Human Services announced the recall
Friday. The sprouts were produced by Caldwell Fresh Foods of
Maywood, Calif., and sold in 18 states under several different
label names. All Caldwell alfalfa products have been recalled.
William E. Keene, a senior epidemiologist at the Oregon health
department, said Caldwell Fresh Foods is cooperating with an
ongoing investigation. The sprouts were sold at certain outlets of
Trader Joe's and Wal-Mart, among other retailers.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes
fatal infections in young children and others with weakened immune
systems.
