NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The growing oil slick from a month-old rig explosion has forced closure of a public beach on a resort island community south of New Orleans.
Mayor David Camardelle of the barrier island town of Grand Isle announced the closure in a news release late Friday morning.
Thick oil from the April 20 BP rig explosion began fouling delicate wetlands at the mouth of the Mississippi River earlier this week and started showing up on the beaches of barrier islands farther to the west on Thursday. Some state fishing waters around Grand Isle also have been closed, although fishing is still open on the north side of Grand Isle.
