St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office, Narcotics Detectives, arrested a suspect from Phoenix, AZ and seized approximately ten-thousand dollars worth of "Crystal" Methamphetamine.
According to Sheriff Bobby Guidroz; his Interstate Criminal Enforcement Units (ICE) were patrolling Hwy. 190, during the chemical spill on I-10 a few days ago. While patrolling, the units observed a driver slow down and change lanes several times for no reason. The units performed a traffic stop and found the driver to be very nervous.
A short investigation followed and the ICE Detectives received several indicators which indicated that the driver may have illegal items in the vehicle. The ICE Detectives requested consent to search the vehicle and the driver refused, so K-9 "Nitro" was used to conduct an open air sniff of the vehicle and he alerted on the front drivers door.
The ICE Detectives searched the vehicle and located approximately five ounces of "Crystal" Methamphetamine, a digital scale and a large book that had a hidden compartment, used to store illegal drugs. The drugs had a street value of approximately ten-thousand dollars. The driver was transported to the St. Landry parish Sheriff's Office and interviewed.
During the interview the driver identified himself as Miles D. Bitsoi of Phoenix, AZ. He also had a valid Phoenix driver's license under that name. He was then booked for his traffic and drug charges. The following morning, the ICE Detectives were informed that an NCIC hit had occurred on the Bitsoi's fingerprints. His name was Robert D. Shippert of Dixon, IL and he had been arrested for Methamphetamine and Falsifying his Personal Information in that area. The Detectives were also informed that Shippert was on Parole and had not reported to his Parole Officer since January of 2009.
The ICE Detectives re-interviewed Shippert and he confirmed the new information. He also stated that he was traveling to Baton Rouge to meet with another suspect to arrange for the delivery of a pound of "Crystal" Methamphetamine. Shippert was then booked and a hold for Illinois Probation and Parole was issued because of his Parole violation.
Sheriff Guidroz stated his Detectives were able to get evidence that ties Shippert to the suspect in Baton Rouge and this persons arrest may be pending. The Detectives have also contacted DEA about the source of the Methamphetamine in Phoenix, AZ.
