BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - While Commissioner of Higher Education
Sally Clausen plans to sharply cut her salary in the upcoming
budget year, her compensation this year has increased because she
retired and was rehired for the job.
The Times-Picayune reports Clausen quietly retired in August
from the $425,000-a-year position. Then, she was rehired to the
same job after spending one weekday as a state retiree - getting a
substantial lump-sum payment in the process.
The moves were made without the consultation of members of the
Board of Regents, the board that coordinates policy for the state's
19 public colleges, universities and professional schools.
The newspaper says Clausen is getting paid $515,625 this year,
because of the lump-sum payment in mid-August for 300 hours of
unused vacation time and 200 unused hours of sick leave.
