UL Softball FYI - Women's Softball

    FYI

FYI - there are 290 Division 1 softball teams in the USA. The NCAA Tournament has only 64 of those teams. UL Softball is in that top 64, and has been for the last eleven straight years. This is year 12 in a row. That is about like football being in a bowl game. Like basketball being in an NCAA regional game. In the last 21 years, UL softball has been in the NCAA tournament 20 times. That's like being in 20 football bowl games.

Many of us who are enamored with our UL Softball team sometimes forget that it is a BIG thing to be in the NCAA Tournament. We almost take winning for granted, winning is difficult. Every team plays to win! Here are the 2010 records of some softball teams that are perennially at the top of the standings in National softball. Not one is without a loss.

University of Washington - 46-5- ranked #1 most of the year in the polls
University of Alabama - 48-9 #1 Seed in the NCAA Tournament
    University of Michigan - 46-6
    University of Arizona - 43-11
    LSU - 44-14
    Texas A&M - 42-14
    ULL - 42-16
    McNeese - 38-25

Some of us expect the Ladies to be in the NCAA tournament every year. It is not easy to get in to the top 64. For only two years, the Sun Belt has been given an automatic bid to the tournament, prior to that UL Softball got in as a 'wild card'. That's not easy.

When we get used to something, we forget how difficult it is to be named as one of the best 64 teams of 290 in the US. We forget how much work and training and money it takes. Wait, MONEY? Gosh, Geez, UL doesn't have any athletic budget to speak of. So, on a shoestring, the coaches and the girls get Lafayette, Louisiana National Recognition. They put UL on the National Stage for pennies. That takes extraordinary work, exceptional talent and amazing coaching. BTW, these are also college STUDENTS that graduate and most are averaging above a 3.2 GPA each semester.

Do you know how to get to Baton Rouge?

I like the points made in the above post. Every year a team reaches post season play the accomplishment should be recognized and appreciated. After all these girls are not all the same ones who did it three or four years ago and the new ones deserve to be praised. We should never take winning for granted and savor each and every victory.

    FYI -

What amazes me is that these girls give so much to the sport they love. They know they will never be in a "draft", they know when they leave the campus, they will not be making millions of dollars playing softball. Even though, they know, they put every ounce of themselves into every practice and into every game. It is so wonderful to see the PASSION they have for their sport. They are playing softball and sacrificing "a life" because they are passionate. This passion is contagious. It makes anyone who ever goes to a practice and watches a game, look on in awe. That's what make softball such a team sport. U don't really see or hear bad things about team chemistry in softball not only here but around the country. This is it for these girls, unlike baseball when some not all, are worried about draft status etc etc. That's when kids put themselves before the team, hence issues evolve

Only 64 teams out of 290 make the NCAA softball tournament every year. 31% make it . . . or put another way 69% don't make it to the tournament each year. And OUR girls have made it every year but one. They deserve our gratitude, command our respect and have earned our support.
