NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Officials say the first sea turtle to be
rescued from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is being washed and cared
for in New Orleans.
Audubon Aquarium spokeswoman Meghan Calhoun says the endangered
Kemp's ridley turtle was found by a biologist in a boat looking for
oiled animals in the slick, and arrived in New Orleans late Tuesday
night.
She says it's probably less than a year old. Calhoun says its
shell is a bit less than seven inches long and about 6½ inches
across.
Calhoun says the turtle got its first bath Tuesday night and
probably will get several more over the next several days.
It's being cared for at the aquarium's Aquatics Center on New
Orleans' west bank.
