LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - The Lafayette City-Parish Council is
expected to begin interviewing the 40 applicants for the new
charter commission sometime within the next few weeks, with the
goal of having the new board seated sometime in June.
The Advertiser reports residents from all nine council districts
turned in their applications before Tuesday's noon deadline.
The commission will be able to recommend changes to the charter,
which has never been amended since going into effect in 1996. In
addition, it will be able to recommend abolishing the current form
of local government and going back to separate city and parish
systems.
