Landry bails out Cajuns in thriller

DENVER — Antoine Landry hit the biggest shot of his University of Louisiana career here on Saturday, a 15-foot buzzer beater to give the Ragin’ Cajuns a thrilling 83-81 victory over the Denver Pioneers.

Landry’s dramatic shot, which capped a furious closing rally by coach Jessie Evans’ visitors, enabled UL to open Sun Belt Conference play with a crucial road victory and deliver a statement about the Western Division race.

The Cajuns have won the West the last two years, and Denver figures to be a major player in the race to unseat them. That made Saturday’s triumph that much more enjoyable.

“I told the team that championship teams find ways to win,” said Evans, whose squad improved to 6-4 overall.

Halfway through the battle, it looked like the Cajuns were in control of the outcome with a 41-33 lead at the break.

A 3-point bucket from Brad Boyd then had the margin at 9 early in the second half, but the Pioneers of coach Terry Carroll put together a 19-1 surge to get the crowd of 889 back into the contest.

“We talked at halftime about the importance of the first five minutes of the second half,” Evans said. “But we did not do what we needed to do during that time, and that showed how critical that was.

“We had some poor shot selection and started to really not take care of our rules of defense. They hurt us with the dribble penetration and with the screens and roll. They beat us up on the boards, which led to them getting second shots.

“Fortunately, we were able to brace up on defense and cause some turnovers.”

Denver, which had been careful with the ball for most of the second half with just four turnovers, gave it up four times in the last three minutes under heat from the Cajuns.

Pioneers Lose Heartbreaker in Conference Opener, 83-81

DENVER - The University of Denver men's basketball team fell to Louisiana 83-81, and ended its four-game winning streak in its conference-opener on Sat., Jan. 10, in Hamilton Gymnasium. Seniors Brett Starkey (Lakewood, Colo.) and forward Zeljko Zupic (Sinj, Croatia) each recorded their fourth double-double of the season, with Zupic tallying a career-high tying 21 points and 12 rebounds and Starkey adding 15 points and 10 rebounds. Denver falls to 8-5, 0-1, while ULL improves to 6-4, 1-0.

"It's really hard to lose when you are in a position to win a huge basketball game," head coach Terry Carroll said. "After not playing well in the first half, we came out in the second half with more intensity and got back into the flow of how we wanted to play. Lafayette made big baskets, rebounds and free throws. They made big plays and we didn't."

The teams went basket-for-basket in the first half, creating 11 lead changes for both sides. ULL started to pull away but junior guard Erik Benzel (Spokane, Wash.) sparked the Pioneers on a 7-0 run to take the lead 19-16, with 10:01 remaining in the half. The Cajuns' Brian Hamilton answered the Pioneers' offensive attack and took the lead 21-19, with 9:19 left in the stanza. Hamilton extended ULL's lead by taking the team on a 6-0 run to regain the lead 27-23, with 5:56 left. Zupic put Denver back in the game with a 3-point play that had the Pioneers trailing, 28-27.
