Two Year Old Killed in Crash
Coteau- Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle crash on LA 89 in Coteau that claimed the life of a two-year-old boy.
According to investigating troopers, on May 14, 2010, at 6:15 p.m., a 2003 GMC Envoy, driven by 27-year-old Erin Gerard of Lafayette, LA, was traveling north on LA 89. Gerard failed to negotiate a left curve. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole, a chain link fence, and a tree.
Gerard and a three-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries. A two-year-old passenger, Carter Gerard of Lafayette, LA, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Upon arrival at the hospital, Gerard was pronounced dead.
Troopers suspected Gerard was impaired and placed her under arrest for DWI, careless operation, vehicular homicide, and vehicular negligent injuring. Gerard was booked into the Iberia Parish Correctional Center. Toxicology samples were obtained, and the results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. The crash remains under investigation.
