NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Gov. Bobby Jindal says the state has spent
more than $3 million to fight the huge oil slick threatening the
state's Gulf Coast and he expects that figure to total more than $5
million once the first month's figures are tallied.
The governor added that he expects the rate of spending to
increase as the fight continues, but he expects oil giant BP to
eventually pick up the tab.
Jindal provided the estimates during a news conference at the
foot of the Rigolets (rig' uh leez') bridge in New Orleans on
Friday. The conference was called to discuss measures being taken
to keep the oil out of Lake Pontchartrain, the great brackish body
of water that separates New Orleans from St. Tammany Parish.
