MOBILE, Ala. - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns’ Donna Bourgeois threw her second career no-hitter, striking out 12 FAU batters as the Cajuns grabbed a 1-0 win over the Owls on day two in the Sun Belt Championship in Mobile, Ala. She threw her first no-hitter against Southern Miss on March 4, 2009. It was also the 76th no-no in Louisiana history.
Bourgeois was on point, retiring 16 batters in a row starting in the first inning until an Owl reached base in the top of the sixth on a dropped third strike. Through six innings she struck out 12 batters including streaks of four and five at one point. She was responsible for 15 of the first 18 outs with only two balls leaving the infield for fly outs.
With the pitching gem, the Cajuns reach the 40-win mark 11th-straight season.
UL’s bats scattered five hits through the first five innings with the lead batter reaching base in four of the frames. But no runs crossed the plate as the Cajuns left five runners on with three in scoring position.
A prime opportunity to score came in the bottom of the second inning. Lana Bowers led off with a triple to right field. But the senior catcher was unable to cross home after the next three Cajuns lined out, struck out and grounded out to end the inning.
The Cajuns finally broke the stalemate in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lana Bowers drew a walk and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Nerissa Myers then singled up the middle, scoring Bowers.
The Owls put their first runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh after a walk and a sacrifice bunt. A ground out to shortstop grabbed the second out but advanced the runner to third. A ground ball down the third base line allowed Verde to make the play at first to seal the no-hitter.
Myers’s game-winner was her second hit on the day as she and Vallie Gaspard each psted two hits each. Bowers and Erikka Murphy rounded out the Cajuns six-hit total.
The Cajuns will now face the winner of the Louisiana-Monroe and Middle Tennessee game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CT.
