BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana House is on record as
being opposed to the federal health care overhaul.
With a 59-15 vote Thursday, the House approved a bill that
declares no one in Louisiana can be mandated to pay a penalty if
they don't have insurance or be required to participate in a health
system.
The measure, backed by Gov. Bobby Jindal, heads next to the
Senate. If passed by the full Legislature, it would be more of a
legislative policy statement than have any real impact, since the
U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide the final fate of the
federal health care overhaul and determine its constitutionality.
Republican Rep. Kirk Talbot's bill asserts Louisiana's rights
under state sovereignty provisions in the U.S. Constitution.
Louisiana already is fighting the health legislation in court.
