BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana officials say oil has washed
up at Whiskey Island, a barrier island off Terrebonne Parish.
Photos show thick, glossy globs called tar balls.
A statement Wednesday says an aerial survey also found possible
oil at neighboring Raccoon Island, but teams on the ground have not
confirmed it.
The Raccoon, Whiskey and Wine islands are in the Terrebonne
Barrier Islands Refuge.
The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries describes Raccoon
Island as one of the most important waterbird nesting areas on the
coast.
Oil was found earlier at South Pass and the Chandeleur Islands.
A news release says 60 workers are cleaning oil from South Pass.
It says bad weather has kept crews from working at other spots
where oil was found on shore.
