After the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries re-opened areas west of the Mississippi River to recreational and commercial fishing Monday, shrimpers at the Port of Delcambre scrambled to get out to the open waters.
"It was a really crazy day," said Joe Cheramie, who was ready to shrimp within just 2 hours of finding out the season had been re-opened.
Like all other shrimpers, Cheramie and his wife Cathy stocked up on the necessities, hoping to be out shrimping in Vermilion Bay for at least a week.
"We don't want a handout, just let us work, that's what we're after right now is to go catch some shrimp," Cheramie said.
