BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana House has agreed to a
rewriting of evaluations for public school teachers that would
partially grade teachers on student test scores.
The Jindal-backed initiative won approval Monday from the House
in a 68-26 vote. It heads to the Senate for debate.
The bill by West Monroe Rep. Frank Hoffmann, a Republican, would
require annual evaluations for all teachers starting in the 2012-13
school year. At least half of the review would be tied to whether
student scores on accountability tests were improving.
Teacher unions opposed the bill.
Supporters argue the data-driven evaluations would tie teachers
to what they should be doing, educating students.
Opponents say standardized tests can't adequately measure the
success of a teacher. They also say the review wouldn't give enough
consideration to problems with parents and children who don't show
initiative.
