Louisiana Garden Club State judges have awarded Lafayette with the State Cleanest City title. Lafayete was awarded the District title at its March 31 judging and reception at Lafayette City Hall. The City of Lafayette hosted a breakfast on Tuesday, May 4, at the Hilton Hotel for the judges and Garden Club members. City/Parish President Joey Durel addressed the crowd, talking about his own experience with littering. Mark Pope, City Environmentalist, pointed out local schoolchildren's winning posters at the Garden Club's contest. Pope also presented the Liberty from Litter sign that is posted around Lafayette, giving the phone number 291-7000 for any witnesses to call and report littering.

Special thanks to all citizens who helped make this possible by keeping their properties free of litter and with lawns well kept. Congratulations and thanks to Jan Dennen and the City personnel who worked so hard in anticipation of this judging. Lafayette Garden Club, by its participation in this program, is furthering the goals of the National Garden Club Federation: conservation, preservation and education.
