BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Initial claims for jobless benefits in
Louisiana dropped 8.2 percent last week.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission says there were 4,574 claims
from the newly unemployed for the week ending May 1. That's down
from the previous week's total of 4,982 when a temporary layoff in
the equipment transportation sector drove up the number.
For the comparable week ending May 2, there were 4,240 initial
claims.
Last week, those still looking for work claimed an additional
56,587 weeks of benefits, down from the previous week's 57,229.
For the comparable week of 2009, there were 48,603 additional
weeks of benefits.
