COCODRIE, La. (AP) - A federally sponsored mission to search for
deep sea corals turns to collecting data from the sea floor and
water near the wild well in the Gulf of Mexico.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says that
for years, scientists have been studying the sea floor about nine
miles from the well that is spewing 200,000 gallons of oil a day.
According to the trip's blog site, scientists from Mississippi
took water and sea floor samples Wednesday from an uncontaminated
area west of the rig. They'll also take samples as close to the
well as possible, and along a track to their study site.
Those and later samples will show any changes in chemicals and
marine organisms.
They'll be analyzed by NOAA, the universities of Georgia and
North Carolina, and other members of an international consortium.
