The local shrimp industry has yet another glimmer of hope in this crude disaster. Wildlife and Fisheries Officials met in Baton Rouge Thursday morning to discuss what the next best step should be.
The Commission actually moved the item up on their agenda, after the meeting room became filled with local shrimpers anxious for an answer. The question, whether or not to open the Spring Shrimp Season early due to the possible threat from the oil spill.
Up for consideration was Zone 2, which includes Vermilion Bay. The Wildlife and Fisheries Commission approved the early season and shrimpers there applauded those efforts.
"We want to thank Wildlife and Fisheries for doing such a great job during this emergency," one shrimper said.
"Y'all are thinking outside the box and that's good. There's no reason why we can't open and close seasons... We've already proven that that works," another said.
Zone 2 will now open Monday, May 10th beginning at 6am. The Commission has given no tentative date as to when this second early shrimp season will close.
