LAFAYETTE – For the second time in less than a year, the UL track and field program is mourning the loss of one of its own.
Berwick native John Melvin passed away on Monday from injuries sustained in a vehicular accident. Longtime coach Charles Lancon died last April.
Melvin was a member of the Cajuns indoor and outdoor track team, earning two letters competing as a sprinter. He had yet to compete in the three indoor meets this season.
Melvin finished the 2002 outdoor season with the second fastest time of any Cajuns runner in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.40 seconds.
He was a four-year track letterman for head coach Paul Gilder at Berwick, setting school records in the 100, 200 and 400-meter races.
Melvin also lettered three times in football for head coach Tommy Bourgeois. He was a member of SADD and BETA, as well as being named Prom King during his prep career.
“We are all saddened at the loss of John Melvin,” Cajuns rack coach Lance Veazey said. “He was a great asset to our team as a person and as an athlete.
“Our prayers and sympathy go out to his parents, Jim and Susie, his sisters and the entire family.”
