...and we're Long Horn fans, correct? Brian say we somehow pass FAU in RPI. How many wins do we need in the tournament? 2...3?
You got it ... Horns fans tonight. I would expect Cole Green on the mound tonight for the Horns. Texas spent Jungmann and Ruffin (3 innings of relief) in a 10 inning win over Baylor last night.
I think more important would be for the Cajuns to pass FAU (and anyone else they can) in the Sun Belt standings. If the Cajuns finish Top 3 in the Sun Belt and have a Top 40 RPI (at the end of the regular season), I think two wins in the Sun Belt tournament would be plenty.
That said, I think it is more important for the Cajuns to pass South Alabama than FAU. Thus, I am an Owl fan next week when FAU goes to Mobile. The reasoning is this ...
The Cajuns have a huge RPI advantage over South Alabama, Arkansas State, Florida International, and Middle Tennessee. If the Cajuns can finish ahead of these teams in the Sun Belt (or finish ahead of some and really close to the others), the NCAA will award an at-large bid to the Cajuns before these teams (they will use the RPI delta as justification). FAU, on the other hand, is #34 in the RPI entering today. If the Cajuns do not win the conference, FAU would be my next choice to win the conference (WKU is not my next choice because that would mean they did well in Lafayette). However, if South Alabama were to win the conference, the NCAA could not overlook this (conference title) and there would be one less at-large bid available.
So, Florida Altantic and Western Kentucky are looking really good for an at-large bid now. Louisiana is on the bubble and needs to position itself as the 3rd team from the Sun Belt to feel good about an at-large bid.
If the season ended today (using the RPI results that will come out tomorrow), I think the Cajuns would be in the field of 64.
