When Terry Touchet joined the Abbeville Fire Department in 1979 because of the benefits, he did not think he would remain a fireman for 31 years.
But what was only expected to be a temporary job turned into a career for Touchet. After battling more than 100 fires and responding to over 1,000 accidents later, Touchet has decided to hang up his fire fighting gear and retire from the fire department.
His official retirement day was April 1. On Tuesday, the fire chief Elvin Michaud and the shift that Touchet worked on gave him a plaque.
