LAPLACE, La. (AP) - The owner of a Cajun sausage factory in
LaPlace says he hopes to reopen Wednesday, two days after house
old-time smokehouses burned.
Aaron Lions is a fourth-generation owner of Jacob's World Famous
Andouille (on-DEW-ee) and Sausage. He tells The Times-Picayune that
on an average day, the four smokehouses processed 1,000 to 2,000
pounds of andouille and other smoked meats and poultry.
The store's retail and inventory areas sustained only minor
smoke damage.
He says one smokehouse is a total loss and a second may be. He
says one built in 1928 is damaged but intact, and the company will
try to rebuild it "if only for nostalgia purposes."
Lions says the operation started 82 years ago, and his family
moved the original store to its current site in 1979.
