Louisiana receives 2nd commitment: Caleb Rubin (Running Back)

LOUISIANA La. — Caleb Rubin’s football season at Lafayette High didn’t end the way he would have wanted, but at least he knows he’ll get other chances to prove his abilities.

The diminutive running back gave a verbal commitment to Louisiana’s program on Tuesday, becoming the Ragin’ Cajuns’ third commitment for the 2004 recruiting class.

“I felt like, with all the injuries I had, I figured I wasn’t going to get a lot of offers,” Rubin said. “But here’s where I wanted to go all along. I really like the school and what they’re doing with the program.”

The 5-foot-7 Rubin was on his way to a big year for the Mighty Lions, starting the year with a 245-yard rushing effort against Breaux Bridge and going over 100 on the ground in four of his first five games.

LOUISIANA La. — On his 39th and final carry of the night, Lafayette High’s Caleb Rubin plowed over a Breaux Bridge defender, then helped him to his feet.

It was that kind of night for the 5-foot-8 Mighty Lion senior, who was nearly unstoppable in Friday’s season opener with 245 yards and a touchdown to propel LHS to a 28-14 triumph.

“This can have such a powerful impact on our whole season,” Rubin said. “All the pressure is off. We won’t relax, but now we can work hard and know we’re a better team.”

LOUISIANA La. — This time, Lafayette High took advantage of someone else’s mistakes.

“The last two weeks, we felt like we let two games get away from us,” said Mighty Lion head coach Mark Barousse. “We had our chances.”

On Friday, the Lions were given two early chances on Comeaux fumbles in its own territory, and built a solid early lead on the way to a 29-7 win over the Spartans in their District 3-5A opener.

Lafayette High (2-2, 1-0) had to march only 40 and 44 yards to a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, and then took control of the game with an impressive 13-play, 80-yard march that took up half the second quarter and upped the advantage to 21-0.

At the same time, Lafayette High’s primary weapon, tailback Caleb Rubin rushed for 100 yards well before the mid-point of the second quarter, but was shaken up at the end of a 47-yard ramble to the Carencro 18. Then, after re-entering the game two plays later, he suffered a high ankle sprain and was sidelined the rest of the game.

“We’ll get it X-rayed tomorrow,” said Lion boss Mark Barousse. “That took something away from us and depth’s a problem for us, but we didn’t play very well defensively.”

The Lions used both the run and the pass en route to their domination of Breaux Bridge, including 245 yards and one touchdown on 39 carries by senior halfback Caleb Rubin.

“Caleb is definitely a work horse type of running back,” Barousse said. “Yes he does have a small frame, but he is well put together. He benches over 300 pounds, power cleans 285 and squats over 400.’’

Delahoussaye agreed.

“The Rubin kid is really special,” Delahoussaye said. “Anytime you have a kid that can carry the football 40 times a game, you know that you have a special player. The last time I could remember a running back with his size and so much impact, was Northside’s Jermaine Martin.”
