Louisiana went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and that left the door open long enough for Tulane to sneak out a 2-1 victory Tuesday evening at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans.
After a one-out walk was issued to Brandon Boudreaux in the seventh inning the Green Wave got a pair of two-out hits to erase a 1-0 Cajuns lead that had existed since the second inning.
Rob Segedin doubled to center field to score Boudreaux who had moved up to second base on a Chase Traffica wild pitch. Two batters later Blake Crohan sent a line drive back up the middle off of Thad Griffen to score Segedin with the game-winning run.
Louisiana(25-16) returns to Sun Belt Conference play this weekend hosting Middle Tennessee at "The Tigue" Friday-Sunday, April 30-May 2. Game times are 6 p.m., on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m., on Sunday.
Fans in attendance were treated to great pitching performances from both the Cajuns and Green Wave (26-16).
UL starter Michael Cook held Tulane to two hits over three innings. He was backed up by Taylor Hubbell, Blake Wascom and Randall Bulliard who combined to hold the Green Wave scoreless for the next three innings. Bulliard was able to strand five Green Wave baserunners over a 1 2/3 innings span.
Tulane starter Matt Petiton matched those efforts tossing seven complete innings, scattering six hits and striking out five.
Ryan Doiron pitched a scoreless frame in the eighth inning and Nick Pepitone in the ninth inning to close the game.
The Cajuns were six hitters into the game before someone reached base, but they took advantage of the opportunity. Tyler Frederick was hit by a pitch from Petiton to start a two-out rally in the second inning.
Alex Fuselier singled to move Frederick/> into scoring position then Justin Robichaux followed with a single of his own to plate Frederick for a 1-0 lead.
Petiton would strand seven Ragin' Cajuns baserunners over the next five innings to keep the Green Wave's deficit at 1-0.
That bought enough time for the seventh inning rally that gave the hosts the victory.
