A developing storm system in the Western States combined with high pressure shifting eastward toward the Atlantic will force surface winds along the Louisiana coast to shift from the east and southeast through Thursday and south-southeast Friday into the weekend. This will likely begin to shift the oil slick offshore from the platform that exploded last week toward the west and northwest and possibly reaching the southeast Louisiana coastal parishes by this weekend. Currently 42,000 gallons of oil continues to leak from the accident site with the slick 100 miles by 45 miles wide or 4500 square miles in areal coverage. KATC TrueView Forecast Wind Maps indicate that winds will likely push the slick toward Gulf Coastal areas Friday and the weekend threatening oyster, shrimp and fishing industries.
