St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Deputies conducted DWI saturation patrols on Saturday night, April 24, 2010. These patrols were in conjunction with the seven proms held by local high schools on that night. Funding was provided by a grant from the Parish Youth Alcohol Grant.
St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said, “Intoxicated and other impaired drivers were the focus of the activity.”
Guidroz said, “over thirty vehicles were stopped by deputies between 9:30 PM and 5:00 AM. Twelve drivers were given field sobriety tests.”
Five DWIs were arrested, all over the age of 21. Tickets issued for other offenses included:
four - license plate illumination, three - open container, three - improper lane usage, three - headlamp violation, two - no driver's license, two - no child restraint, two - failure to use turn signal, two - driving under suspension, and one each for: illegal window tint, expired MVI sticker, and expired license plate. Three vehicles were towed. One individual was arrested for possession of marijuana.
Sheriff Guidroz said he is pleased that the Youth Alcohol Grant funds DWI patrols and other measures to reduce deaths and injuries to the youth and all citizens of the parish and state.
National data show that about 3 in every 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash as some time in their lives.
Sheriff Guidroz said: “we are pleased to see that the message about DWI is becoming more widespread and the public knows we are serious about this life threatening violation.”
Guidroz, said, “There will be more DWI saturation patrols and DWI checkpoints in the future." Guidroz once again offers a graphic statement for parents and teenagers to consider – as a teenager, if you drink and drive – you may die.
