Lafayette City-Parish Council voted-and got all 9 members to say "yes"-to annexing the land they say is rightfully theirs.
"We've protected a city-owned asset paid for by city taxes, and made sure that piece of property is in the city of Lafayette," says Parish President Joey Durel.
The meeting was called Sunday and held Monday morning.
Lafayette and Broussard have been fighting for more than 270 acres of land that includes the Les Vieux Chenes Golf Course and Fabacher Field. All the land is in an unincorporated part of Lafayette Parish near Broussard.
Broussard Mayor Charles Langlinais did not attend and declined to comment on the phone.
Meantime Councilman William Theriot, who says the land is all in his district, expressed his concerns about not being consulted enough on the annexation, but still voted "yes" at the end of the meeting.
In recent weeks, with the Ambassador Caffery Parkway South extension opening, the towns are trying to stake their claim over property in the area.
As Youngsville resident Carlette Landry says, "it's like striking oil, and everybody's trying to get a piece of the action, but we're not hearing anything about it... doesn't the community have a say?"
