CAJUNS WRAP UP EXHIBITION SLATE WITH WIN OVER ARKANSAS ANGELS

Louisiana lA. - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns took their second exhibition victory in as many tries with an 90-80 win over the Arkansas Angels on Thursday night.

The win over the Angels was the final tune-up for the Cajuns before Tuesday's nationally televised (ESPN) game at Georgia Tech in the first round of the pre-season NIT.

Brad Boyd led the Cajuns with 24 points. Boyd's five second half three-pointers helped the Cajuns overcome a closely contested second half.

Antoine Landry added 21 points to match former Cajuns point guard Kenneth Lawrence.

Down 42-29 at the half, Arkansas center Festus Hawkins opened the second half with a basket, but the Angels' effort was quickly quelled by a 6-0 run from the home team.

The Angels bedeviled the Cajuns with a 10-2 run to close the margin to 60-50 in favor of UL with 11:35 to play.

Arkansas scored nine more unanswered points to cut the Cajuns lead to 60-59. Landry nailed a three-pointer, but Kenneth Reynolds answered for Angels.

Boyd responded with a three-pointer to give the Cajuns a 66-62 edge with seven minutes to play.

Reynolds' lay-up cut the Arkansas' shortfall to two, but Chris Cameron converted a pair of free throws to pull the lead back to four.

Reynolds missed a pair of free throws before Boyd drilled a three-pointer to increase the Cajuns lead to 71-64.

A triple by Reynolds brought the Angels back within one-point, 73-72, but Laurie Bridges answered for the Cajuns with three minutes remaining in the game.

Boyd hit another three to give the Cajuns a seven point lead, which they would not relinquish.

Lawrence opened the game with a three-pointer against his former team as the Angels built a quick 5-0 lead.

The teams remained locked at 14-14 until the Cajuns went on a 12-0 spurt prompted by a three-pointer from Brian Hamilton. Two baskets by Landry, another from Hamilton and a dunk by Ross Mouton helped UL to a 26-14 edge.

Brad Boyd nailed a three-pointer and a tough jumper, followed by basket from Landry to build the Cajuns lead to 17-points.

The Angels responded with five unanswered points to close within 13 points, but a triple from Landry put the hosts up 40-25 with 90 seconds remaining in the half.

Mouton matched a jumper by Lawrence before Lawrence's put-back at the buzzer sent the teams to their locker rooms with the Cajuns holding a 42-29 advantage.

  2. Default Lady Cajuns Give up the ship in second half

LOUISIANA La. - Poor second half transition defense cost Louisiana's Lady Cajuns on Thursday night as Louisiana fell to The Jackson Babes 66-64.

The loss is the second of the exhibition season for the Cajuns. Louisiana will begin the regular season on Nov. 25 at Southeastern Louisiana.

After the Lady Cajuns built a 40-25 halftime lead, the Babes started the second half with a 7-0 run. A basket by Anna Petrakova stopped the outburst, but it just slowed the Babes as they continued to score. A 16-8 Babes' run closed the gap to 50-48 with 12 minutes to play.

Alexandra Kotta's free throw was the difference as the Lady Cajuns clung to a 51-50 lead at the midway point of the second half. A three-pointer shortly thereafter by Sharee Glenn helped the Cajuns up their lead to four points.

The Babes came back to take a lead, but it was short lived, as the Cajuns tied it at 57-57 off of two free throws from Nakita Scott with five minutes left in the game.

The Babes outscored the Lady Cajuns 6-2 over the next three minutes to build a four-point lead.

A defensive rebound from Petrakova led to a three pointer off the fingertips of Kotta to pull the Lady Cajuns to within one point with 1:10 to go in the contest.

Down 66-64, a three pointer by Sharee Glenn with three seconds remaining rimmed out to eliminate the Cajuns chance of winning.

Petrakova led the Cajuns with 15 points and 18 rebounds, her second double-double of the pre-season. Bernette Tolston contributed 11 points and seven rebounds, while Kotta chipped-in 10 points and six rebounds.

The Lady Cajuns out-rebounded the Babes 56-37, but UL turned the ball over 27 times to the Babes' 14.

The Babes made 23-of-29 free throws, while the Lady Cajuns went 9-of-12 from the stripe.

The Cajuns and Babes both came out shooting early. Treys by Tolston and Petrakova accounted for the first six points of the night for Louisiana.

Trailing 9-8 early in the first half, the Cajuns went on a 9-2 run to take a 17-11 lead. UL continued to increase their lead. A steal and lay-up by Ashley Blanche gave the Cajuns a 12-point cushion, 29-17.

The Babes responded with four free throws from Ta'Keisha Lewis and two from Laquan Stallworth to pull within six points with 3:47 to play in the first stanza.

A bucket by Petrakova stopped the visitors run and started a Cajuns outburst. Kayla Edwards found a three-pointer, as did Kotta, then Blanche to expand the Cajuns margin to 40-23 with less than one minute remaining in the half.

Evans not pleased after ULL wins exhibition, 90-80

LOUISIANA La. -- The sense of urgency in the voice of Jessie Evans was obvious Thursday night. "We need to get much better fast and we don't have much time," the University of Louisiana at Lafayette men's basketball coach said.

That admonition came after ULL beat the Arkansas Angels 90-80 in a final exhibition at the Cajuns.

Before the men's game, ULL's women lost to the Jackson Babes, 66-64.

Other than the Cajuns shooting 78.9 percent from the free-throw line, Evans said he wasn't pleased with ULL's effort.

"Everything else was a negative," Evans said. "One thing I will say for us is we play as a team. If Brad (Boyd) takes a bad shot, Laurie (Bridges) will take a bad one and then so will Brian Hamilton."

The Cajuns will look for quick improvement Tuesday when they travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech. The 6 p.m. tipoff will be one of several preseason NIT games.

I had fun at the game last night I even saw the second half of the girls game. They easily should have won that game. I think UL can beat GT if they get some outside shots. I know they can't win the inside game Georgia Tech has a guy that is over 7 feet tall.

I like our new guys. Did you see Ross Mouton's slam dunk last night!!!!!! Who said "White Men Can't Jump!"

Hamilton looks good too & Antoine Landry was more accurate last night than the first. With Laurie, it looks like we've got 4 guys that can shoot 3's.
