A strong defensive showing and error-free softball proved to be the difference as Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team edged out Florida Atlantic, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Lamson Park.
Louisiana is now 31-14 overall and 12-3 in the Sun Belt, stretching their win-streak to a season-best eight games. FAU falls to 21-23 and 6-8 in the league.
Both team struggled to take advantage of runners on base, with UL stranding seven and FAU left six of their own.
The Cajuns’ sole run came off a homer by Christi Orgeron.
Through three innings, UL’s defense was dominant. Melissa Verde and Nerissa Myers both turned double plays to sit down the Owls’ bats.
In the bottom of the third with one out, Orgeron swung at the first pitch and sent it over the left field wall for her 15th home run of the season and the 1-0 advantage.
The Cajuns would struggle through the next two innings with only one batter reaching a base on a walk. The Owls did not fair much better as they posted just three hits through six innings.
UL mustered five hits on the afternoon with Gabriele Bridges going 2-for-3. Vallie Gaspard posted a hit to extend her current hitting streak to 11 games.
Donna Bourgeois improved to 16-8 with her fifth shutout of the season. She struck out four, walked four and allowed four hits.
The Cajuns will hit the road this weekend for a three-game series against Troy. Saturday’s doubleheader is set to start at 3 p.m. CT and will air live on CSS/CST. The nightcap will be televised in tape delay on Sunday. Check with your local cable provider for channel availability.
