COTE BLANCHE, La. (AP) - More than 100 salt miners in Cote
Blanche begin the third week of a strike against North American
Salt Co.
Peggy Landon, a spokeswoman for parent company Compass Minerals
of Overland Park, Kan., said Wednesday that the strike is
continuing.
A three-year contract expired March 24, and the United
Steelworkers went on strike April 7.
Mine worker and local negotiator Terry Gaddison Jr. told The
Abbeville Meridional that union members voted unanimously to
strike.
Miners would say only that the offer would be "life-changing"
for miners and their families.
Landon told the newspaper that the union demanded a 24 percent
salary increase over two years and restrictions on schedule
changes.
The mine is about 30 miles from Abbeville.
