Press Release-Louisiana State Fire Marshal H. "Butch" Browning sadly announced, that an early morning fire claimed the life of a mother and her son. The Grosse Tete Volunteer Fire Department was summoned at 03:29 hrs to respond to a residential home on fire located at 77075 Gardner Lane in Grosse Tete. The Firefighters arrived within seven minutes to find the entire home in flames. They quickly extinguished the fire and made entry to rescue the occupants.
Despite the heroic efforts of the first responders the two persons living in the home succumb to death as a result of this fire. The mother Margaret Scott (dob. 4-10-26) and her son Joseph E. Scott (dob. 11-20-40) were both found in the home and were pronounced dead on the scene and their bodies were placed into the custody of the Iberville Parish Coroner.
The Louisiana State Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation into the cause of this fire and the reasons for this tragic loss of life. The Fire Marshal Deputy's are working with the Grosse Tete Police and Iberville Sheriff to further complete this investigation. At this time there are no indicators to suggest that this fire is suspicious. Investigators are evaluating the homes electrical system to see if any failure occurred. More information will come when lab test are complete. There were no working smoke detectors in this home.
