Baton Rouge, La. -(AP) Anyone who attends a cockfight, bets on a cockfight or pays
admission to any place where people can watch or wager on a
cockfight could face jail time, under a bill headed to the Senate
floor for debate.
Legislators banned cockfighting a few years ago, but there are
complaints the rooster fights continue even though they are
outlawed.
"If it's illegal to stage it, then it's illegal for you to be
there," said Sen. Danny Martiny, R-Kenner.
Martiny's bill (Senate Bill 38) to create the crime of
"participation in cockfighting" was approved without objection
Tuesday by a Senate judiciary committee. Anyone convicted of the
crime would face a jail sentence of up to six months and a fine up
to $500.
