BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - State budget cuts threaten an
anti-truancy program in Baton Rouge, the district attorney there
says.
District Attorney Hillar Moore III said Monday that the yearlong
effort between his office and the East Baton Rouge Parish school
system appears to be working. The campaign has included automated
phone calls with Moore's voice to families with children not in
school. Also, there have been more than 60 meetings this year with
families of thousands of children who were absent five days or
more. Prosecution of parents is also possible under the program.
So far, Moore said, his office hasn't had to resort to
prosecution, but two or three cases are nearing prosecution and his
office is reviewing about 20 new cases a week now.
