Season Review
After 39 games, we are 22-17 compared to 19-20 last season. We are 5-7 in conference and our RPI fell from 48 to 52. Winning the series against Troy was crucial, though we all wanted a sweep. We now have 02 extra base hits [56 2b, 8 3b, 38 HR] compared to 78 xbh all of last year. After four weeks of conference play we are 5th in BA, 4th in scoring, 4th in doubles, 6th in triples, 5th in HR and 4th in RBI. On the defensive front we are 6th in fielding%, 6th in ERA, 8th in WHIP and 6th in runs allowed.
Week 10 Preview
This week we have a mid-week game against UVa and a weekend series at James Madison. UVa is very good. It will take our best to win there, but there is a chance. James Madison is struggling. They hit fairly well [5th in scoring], but they are 11th in the Conference in ERA [5.14], WHIP [1.84] and fielding % [.959]. We should be able to hit and score well against JMU, but we need to be consistent there, and we need pitching to be at least as good as this past weekend as well as error free defense. A sweep of JMU would be unsurprising, but a series win is imperative.
On another note; though we are all disappointed in our conference showing so far, digging a bit deeper, we should not be overly surprised. The SBC is currently 5th in Conference RPI, behind only the P4, and our RPI is closer to 4th than to 6th. The conference has 3 top 50 teams, 8 Top 75 teams and 10 top 100. The worst RPI in the Conference is 122. No other non-P4 has more than 7 top 100 teams.
For many years we have hoped for a time when playing the bottom half of the conference was not an RPI killer. We have it now, and honestly, I expect that the SBC schools will continue to maintain this. We are down from our usual standard, but probably not as much as we think we are. Our conference losses have all been to top 75 RPI teams except for the one loss to Troy [79]. Sometimes when you get what you ask for it is a mixed blessing. We must improve over the offseason to take advantage of this conference strength.
