I am sure there are a lot of Cajun fans frustrated and concerned about the program. I am as well. To suggest a coaching change this early in her career, to me, is a bit rash.
Losing a series to USM and getting swept by ULM is an awful stretch of softball. Is it fireable? No.
If this season goes off the rails, hard questions should be asked, and I am sure Habetz will be asking them herself.
But it is March. Of Year 2. There is talent on this team..in my opinion, enough to at least compete for a tournament championship.
Unfortunately inconsistency in all areas is putting them behind the 8-ball.
In answer to your last question about what other coach had to face similar issues Habetz has faced, the answer is, Gerry Glasco in his first year as head coach.
Glasco was not hired until November 20th, 2017. He had to replace a very successful coach who had been at the helm for 15 years.
As the new coach, Glasco had to deal with the departure of a number of key players who opted to transfer out. Those players included D. J. Sanders, Aleah Craighton and Alyssa Denham. Because he was hired so late, he had to leverage his coaching connections to bring in immediate–impact players. He did so by bringing in Alissa Dalton and Raina O'Neal. Glasco also elevated pitcher Summer Ellyson to be his ace. A status she probably would not have achieved with the previous coach. With the existing players, freshman and transfers, Glasco declared he would not have prefabricated opinions or preset lineups allowing every player to compete for starting roles.
Glasco had to quickly establish his system and earn the trust of a shell-shocked roster that was just three months away from opening day. He had little time to implement his offensive strategies or evaluate the existing talent before competitive play began.
During the season, a total of nine players dealt with injuries that caused all of them to miss games. In addition, Glasco had to deal with the illness and eventual death of his mother.
Despite these hurdles, Glasco led the team to a 41-16 record in 2018 and reached the NCAA regional finals. By doing so, he saved the Ragin Cajun softball program.
I agree let's let the season play out. There is enough talent on this team to where we should be right near the top and in the hunt for the championship this year. The reason we are one game from being in LAST PLACE, I repeat LAST PLACE, is we are a poorly coached team, period. I have been supporting UL softball since 1993. This is by far the worst coached team we have ever had. The girls, this program and the fans deserve much better. Unless there is significant improvement immediately in that regard, there needs to be some serious evaluations, conversations to be had at seasons end.
Glasco was and is a damn good coach. Obviously you have an axe to grind. Good coaches and leaders don't make excuses. Everyone one is dealing with NIL and transfer portal. ULM with the smallest budget and the least money in the conference just swept our behinds. We have the talent on this team to not be in the hunt for a championship. Face it, we are just a very poorly coached team at this point.
He also had 7 returning starters when he took over. How many did AH have? Well I will tell you Cissy, Roe, and Maddy if I remember correctly. So Glasclown had 4 more returning starters and Sam Landry ace pitcher so I completely disagree
