If you have hopes of playing college softball — understand this:
It’s not the same game it was a few decades ago.
Offensively, the game has shifted from pitcher-dominant, small ball to power-driven, lineup-deep offenses.
The modern game is built around damage — not just contact.
Old college softball:
Speed. Slap. Bunt pressure. Ace pitchers controlling games.
Modern college softball:
Deeper lineups. More power. More extra-base hits. More teams that can do serious damage from the box.
The baseline level of offense is higher
And the best teams combine on-base + power
You can still win without power…
…but your margin for error is smaller.
And at the highest levels of college softball —
teams that can create damage separate themselves.
If you’re a high school player and you’re not training to hit the ball hard in the air — consistent line drives — you’re putting yourself behind.
