UL Softball Season Review and Week 8 Preview

    Season Review

After 32 games, we are 19-13 compared to 16-16 last season. We are 3-3 in conference and the series loss to USM doesn't look as bad this week as it did last, as USM won their series against App 2-1. We now have 89 extra base hits [49 2b, 7 3b, 33 HR] compared to 78 xbh all of last year. After two weeks of conference play we are sixth in BA, 3rd in runs, 5th in doubles, 6th in triples, 5th in HR and 4th in RBI. On the defensive front we are 5th in fielding%, 5th in ERA and 6th in runs allowed.

    Week 8 Preview

This week, we have a Tuesday game vs McNeese and a weekend series with ULM. McNeese is a top 50 team, but they are coming off a bad weekend, having been swept by Nicholls. This is a must win game for us if we are to keep any hope alive for an at-large bid, and an important win regardless of its at-large implications. If our pitching performs as well as it did this past weekend, we should win this game.

The weekend series against ULM on the road is pivotal. A series win would be big and a sweep would be huge. ULM is slightly better than us in Fielding %, pitching ERA is about a wash, as is the # of walks and HBP given up. We have scored 186 runs to their 148 on the season. As is the case with McNeese, if our pitchers do as well as this past weekend and our defense plays to is usual standard, we should win this series.

I believe there is still an outside chance at an at-large bid. Our RPI as of today is 43, and we have 13 games remaining against top 50 RPI teams. If we can manage to win all our games outside the top 50 and win at least half our top 50 games, there is a chance.

Thanks for keeping track of this. Especially the 25' to 26' comparisons. It's good to see some improvement, as frustrating and slow as it may be at times.

Thanks. I try to dig a little deeper than many fans have time for. I am glad that you enjoy it.

All of our remaining games except the JMU series are against top 100 teams, and JMU will likely be there by the time we play them.

I would guess, top-100 especially after Louisiana plays them.

Habetz on playing McNeese: "It's the biggest game we're going to play...their RPI is better than anyone in the Sun Belt...we're good enough to beat them"

Woof, has the softball program fell this far to where McNeese is our biggest game on the schedule and we are only hopeful we can beat them??

Maybe taken out of context or poor word choice. Perhaps one of the biggest we have left on the schedule.

The 2025 team was a few wins away from being in the at large conversation. Habetz knows where we stand and what it's going to take to be in the conversation this year. It's the next biggest one because it's tomorrow and they can't afford to drop too many more.

McNeese is a quality program. They were 1 out away from a Super Regional 2 years ago and are a top 50 program most years.
