What does it mean to "deserve to be there?" You don't know. I don't know. No one knows.
That's why selection committees are useful, and it's also why we will inevitably disagree with them. This idea that selection committees are out to get the little guy is silly and overused. There is a legitimate argument that a mediocre power conference school would be better than an upper level non-power conference school--better talent, better coaching, etc. Not always, but more often than not.
If a small school wants to make the field of 64, they have three paths: (1) Win the conference. (2) Make a ridiculously difficult schedule. (3) Win every game of a ridiculously easy schedule. Miami Ohio took the last option, made the tournament, and then lost by 22 to an 11-loss Tennessee team.
I don't think for a second they are out to get the little guy.
They are out to promote the hiccup big guy.
The problem is occasional appearances creates this perpetual 'dear in the headlights' loss result.
"Don't deserve to be there" means terrible in conference, average out of conference.
That doesn't mean their money acquisitions can't finally come together as a team and peak in late March.
Peaking late doesn't mean they "deserved to be there."
there was never a concept which was more in the eye of the beholder than “ deserved to be there”
