The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team begins Sun Belt Conference play with the league-opening series in Hattiesburg, Mississippi from Friday-Sunday, March 13-15 against Southern Miss at the USM Softball Complex.
The time has come for Sun Belt Conference play and it can’t come soon enough for the UL softball team.
The long preconference schedule period is over and now the Ragin’ Cajuns can focus on their quest to win a league championship.
The next step begins at 6 p.m. Friday when UL travels to meet Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
In games played this Monday through Thursday teams we have already played went 11-6 [.647], a good thing for us. The conference went 6-5 [.545], a bit below the season pace for the conference.
The upcoming series with USM could be pivotal for the season. They are 18-10, but they are 1-7 against teams in the top 100 of the Massey Composite, 2-7 vs top 100 RPI. Their two best wins are against LTU and UAB. They are 0-3 vs top 50 RPI.
The Mustard Buzzards are not a team that hits home runs [3], but they do have 43 doubles and 9 triples. They are hitting .312 as a team and have a team OPS of .822. Defensively, they are very solid, with a fielding average of .978. The team ERA of their pitching staff is 3.35, team WHIP is 1.43 and OBA is .263.
While the statistics of the two teams are very close, the caliber of competition the Cajuns have played is considerably better overall than what the Golden Eagles have faced. I am very concerned about the 104 free trips to first base [in 171.1 innings] our pitching has allowed so far this season, as opposed to the 85 given by USM pitchers in 186 innings.
All that being said, I am reasonably confident that we will play well enough to at least win the series, though I feel that we should sweep.
SERIES HISTORY
Series Record: Louisiana leads, 54-5
Sun Belt Play: Louisiana leads, 9-0
Last: 5/3/25 – UL 4, USM 2 (Lafayette, La.)
In Hattiesburg: Louisiana leads, 19-1
Streak: UL, +9
Anything other than a sweep is unacceptable to our standards over USM Softball.
Lets get it!
What is wrong with our outfielders. Two drop balls in outfield. Two errors
Can’t hit???
2 dropped pop-ups. Pitiful.
Games over. Right fielder playing to close. This happened in other games
Night and day. Up and down. Left? Or is it right? Just so unpredictable.
We don't look ready to play.
