Not really. I think most thought japan and dominican republic would do better, and challenge with USA was pitching, but pitching cant be blamed!
Plus USA made finals, russia didnt make the finals in 1980.

One major problem is starting a TSAB alum 3rd baseman hitting .100 over one hitting .400, wonder reason behind that one, probably the difference in the game
