The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team continues a busy seven-game week and begins the third weekend of non-conference tournament action on Friday, February 20 at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge playing Howard and Michigan State in back-to-back games beginning at approximately 1:30 p.m.

The keys to improvement for the Cajuns have not changed. The two most glaring issues we have had so far this season are walks and hit batters. Nearly 1/2 of our opponents base runners have reached base via the walk by being hit, or through error [42 walks, 12 hit batsmen, 64 hits, 9* errors].

* not all errors put a runner on base, but I used our error total.

Our immediate goal should be to limit free passes to a minimum. Walks + hit batsmen should always be less than 3.5 per game. Errors should be less than 0.5 per game. If we can achieve those goals, while holding our opponents to the same BA [.253] we now allow, that should be good enough for our bats to win most games for us.

Howard is 6-3 against a very weak schedule. We should win this game easily.

Michigan State is also 6-3, with wins over Clemson and Virginia Tech and losses to Auburn and twice to Charlotte. MSU will be very challenging for us, but they ARE beatable. The Spartans hit only .268 as a team, but they do have 29 extra base hits so far this season, and are scoring 6.78 runs/game. [We score 7.4] Their team ERA is 5.04 and team WHIP is 1.79. [As a point of reference, our ERA is 3.52, and our WHIP is 1.61.
