I was doing some work at the same time so I didn’t watch every single second but it was on in the background. I’m not sure if I remember the Cajuns playing a zone. What I did see over and over is playing man and switching on everything which put us out of position and odu getting multiple dunks and layups on the back door cuts. It also put some of our not best defenders on their good guards who pretty much had their way with driving to the basket. I love the way the team fights especially on defense but I sure wish we would mix up some zone in there from time to time.
Good points by Mullett. To be frank the defense sucked today. After listening to Coach White, he probably agrees. Beyond the switch issues, I saw 2 other problems. Teams have our high trap scouted well. If you recognize it early, you can get a shot at the basket with an extra pass. When we did not switch or trap, our guys were overplaying the ball handler in 1 on 1 situations. That allowed dribble penetration to the basket and our rotations/help came too late. On the day Bo Lamar died, a 1-3-1 zone would have been appropriate. Bo was very effective playing the top of the zone. While offensive play tonight was not great, it was good enough to win with a better defensive effort.
Old Dominion used torrid second-half shooting and all five starters scored in double figures as the Monarchs defeated Louisiana 83-72 Monday evening at Chartway Arena in a rescheduled game from January 24th.
