Two projects that could change the face of UL are in the planning stages and moving along well. Those two projects — additional student housing and a new student union — will likely attract a more vibrant campus life, UL President Joe Savoie said ...

This seems like a very ambitious goal for student housing. I would be curious to see what their plans are.

I would imagine that this would create a great new revenue stream for the university that may have previoulsy been unrealized due to the lack of quality housing options....

Not to mention the expected upsurge in enrollment with student housing on campus. It is time for UL to grow to over 20,000 over the next few years.

Thank God. The dorms on UL have been subpar for a long time, with several of the old dorms closing in the past few years because of neglect and being simply inadequate. I'm looking forward to this stuff happening, especially since I was in that number that voted on and passed the Student Union fee and got to see not the first brick laid in the 6 years I was in school. I'm glad we're finally being proactive in these matters. "If you build it, they will come."

The same architect firm (Architects Southwest) that did the Dupre Library renovations is the same firm that is going to do the Student Union addition/renovation. Eager to see what it will look like. Can't wait for Denbo and Bancroft come down also.

I think it is good to see UL taking advantage of the current economy.

Many of the projects that were postponed due to post Katrina construction costs are now being started due to the depressed cost of the current market.

If other universities are trying to sit to ride out the current financial environment, we will be better positioned as an university when the markets rebound. We just need to keep plodding along. So far, no complaints with Dr. Savoie.

This is awesome news. Very positive for the University. We all know the Student Union was WAY overdue for a complete overhaul. No doubt, expanding the on campus housing is vital for the the future of UL. Good moves, nice, Dr. S.

FYI. Just to clarify since we tend to trash Dr. A. I think we need to give some credit where due. Both of these items were started under his tenure. Dr. S. just inherited them.

I'm very interested to see what these new projects look like. If done right, the Union, along with the demolition of the ugly buildings surrounding it, could be a really special area. I always liked hanging around Cypress Lake, but I never had any reason to go to the Union because, well, it sucks.

As for on campus housing, this is long overdue as well. I hope UL decides to abandon the Legacy Park model, which is too sprawling, for a more condensed housing solution. If land is at a premium then suburban style apartment complexes are not the answer. I like Legacy and would have liked to have lived there, but it's not the solution going forward. Prison-style high-rises are not the answer either, but there has to be a happy medium.

The new Union is scheduled to wrap around the lake and to have a Mall type atmosphere with food restaurants and various shops to service the new housing area in the front of campus for undergraduates---the Legacy style in the rear of campus would house mostly upper grade level students----On campus housing will go from 1500 to over 5000K!!!! As for my being on the money---I think I heard this!!!!lol

Just about 10 years late for recruiting students (dorms). Has really hurt in bringing in more quality students from outside area. We've lost a huge number due to this. Glad to see it being addressed. Lots of discussions in past about this but never got anywhere. This is one of three areas I fault Doc on. Hiding money under the parking lots is not one of them.
