Let me give you guys a brief history of the University of Charlotte 49ers football history. It is a pretty interesting one. Bonnie Cone (if you are familiar with the Charlotte area, you know the name Cone), was the founder of the University of North Carolina Charlotte, and she had a nephew who broke his arm playing football on campus, she swore that as long as she was alive football would not be allowed on the campus and this held true until her death, she passed away in 2003. As soon as that happened the swirl around college football at now the University of Charlotte began to get a buzz. In 2006 the started a committee to look into the possibility of football for the 49ers a school with a rich history in basketball. In 2008 they voted to start football by season 2013, believe me, Bonnie Cone was rolling over in her grave. I had heard her on many radio shows in her life preaching that as long as she lived football would never come to the University that she founded. In 2013 football kicked off at the university and in 2015 they officially joined CUSA. In 2023 they joined the American Athletic Conference (AAC). They have had 1 winning season and that was in 2019 where they went 7-6 and lost to Buffalo in there lone football bowl appearance.
There are people who believe that Bonnie Cone still has a curse on Charlotte football because of this.
