The top universities you mentioned are all top academic universities. They capitalize on that with great football that gets their alumni and fans fired up
about the university and show their pride and support in the gear they wear. UL has never understood what athletics can do to raise its presence with alumni and fans. Academic achievements go un-noticed. UL can't figure out how to capitalize its academic achievements with great athletics, primarily football, to increase its visibility nationally, increase enrollment, and multiply donations for both academics and athletics. Until that changes, UL will continue to be a small time school in perception and actuality.

What is the best way to increase enrollment with serious students rather than attracting sports fans who might not be tier 1 students

    Make it look fun.

No matter how smart you are, whether you participate or not, even if you rarely leave your confines, when you do, you love it when an outsider gives kudos to the overall vibe of where you invested or are about to invest.

Its going to be a long sentence, 4, 5 years.

    Make it look fun.

You aren't wrong. However, the loudest and most narcissistic are people that never went to school. It's like TSAB, but Texas sized.
